Lourdes Gutierrez’s Guide to Art Basel
Since 2002, art aficionados and high-end galleries from around the world have flocked to Miami for the annual Art Basel event - a global art fair staged in Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Basel, Switzerland. The beauty of Basel lies in its breadth, from the exclusive invite-only opening night and countless celebrity-attended private events, public exhibitions, and vibrant satellite fairs. Over the course of four days, visitors gather to learn, critique, peruse, and purchase the most intricate and unusual art. This year, expect a variety of private collections and events from Miami Beach to the Arts and Entertainment Districts. Here are our top picks by neighborhood:
Design Miami Meridian Avenue & 19th Street
While Art Basel showcases modern and contemporary work, Design Miami focuses on design - from furniture to jewelry and more. Tickets are available starting at $27 for the exhibition, which takes place from 12/5 - 12/9.
Art Basel 1901 Convention Center Drive
Over 200 modern and contemporary art galleries will be present at this year’s official Basel fair. Tickets range from $50 - $450 on 12/6-12/9, while the opening day, 12/5, is by invitation only.
Faena Festival “This is Not America” 3300 Collins Avenue
This inaugural free event, curated by Zoe Lukov, puts Miami’s role as a welcoming city to those from across the US, Americas, and around the world. Exhibitors can expect activations at the Faena hotel, forum, and on public streets from 12/3-12/9.
